Doctor Patient Relationships –
Navigating Medical Visits – GP, ER, Specialist Consults etc.
Karen Firus MFA and Dr. Ric Arseneau

KAREN is a charismatic and empowering patient partner, educator, health mentor, and inspirational keynote speaker who has been actively involved with UBC Health since 2017. Living with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), aka chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), for 45 years, she is considered a pioneer, triumphing over adversity.

With a background as an award-winning filmmaker, exhibited artist, and on-air arts and entertainment television news journalist, Karen brings a vibrant flair and unique POV to her presentations on storytelling, visual arts and humanities in health professional education, invisible complex chronic illness, advocacy, interprofessional teamwork, and collaborative decision-making between patient and practitioner.

Karen received her MFA in Film Production — specializing in production design and directing — from the University of British Columbia. She adores lipstick colours, pugs, the history of fashion, and ancient Egypt.

Karen is a recipient of the R. Paul Kerston Award, the highest honour given to a patient partner in UBC Health, for innovations in teaching. This Magenta Dynamo has motivated countless students, educators and others through her passion, humour, and signature pep talks — Karen truly believes that anything is possible!
